We speak with Mick Baccio, Global Security Strategist at Splunk in Boston at .conf25.

Mick outlines the evolution of the Splunk SURGe team into Foundation AI, emphasising their response to the SolarWinds attack and their collaboration with Cisco and Robust Intelligence to build large language models for cybersecurity. Baccio highlighted the importance of consistency in cybersecurity practices, likening it to “eating your cyber vegetables.” He expressed hope for AI to automate 80-90% of cybersecurity issues but acknowledged the challenges and ongoing innovations in attack vectors. Baccio also stressed the need for robust governance and auditing in AI implementation to prevent unintended harm.
