Welcome to 2018 and the conclusion of 2017 podcast releases. MySecurity Media were recently visiting Hanoi, Vietnam courtesy of Milestone Systems and recorded podcast interviews on video surveillance and related technologies.


In the last of our WICME interviews, we speak with Sandra Ragg, the First Assistant Secretary for the Office of the Cyber Security Special Adviser with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (update: in January 2018, Sandra was promoted to the position of Deputy National Cyber Security Adviser within the newly formed Department of Home Affairs), and Heide Young, the National Events Manager for the Australian Women in Security Network, or AWSN.

In addition to Episode 26, Narelle Devine, Chief Information Security Officer for the Department of Human Services discusses the difficulty in going out to market to find talent in cyber security, and how it takes ‘all sorts’ with a broad experience to build a strong cyber security team. The interview also discuss her role as a CISO and the importance of developing a peer-to-peer network to generate solutions and collaborate on ideas.


In this interview, Chris Cubbage talks to Andy Battle, co-founder and Steve Simpson, General Manager of ES2. The three discuss the growth of the business, and projects currently being conducted around Australia, as well as the increase in Incidence Response Plans,

Julie Inman-Grant, the Australian eSafety Commissioner at the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, speaks with Chris Cubbage at the Women in Cyber Mentoring Event in Sydney. Julie discusses her role and her focus on online safety, preventing cyber bullying, and child exploitation, and how her 17 years formerly at Microsoft, as well as Adobe, and Twitter, assist her in her role as the Commissioner of eSafety.


Steve Schupp, co-founder of Asterisk Information Security, the largest pure-play security consultancy in Western Australia, discusses the company’s rapid growth over the past 6 years. The interview delves into the maturity of the information security industry in WA, particularly with respect to the engagement of company directors and boards in cyber security issues. Chris Cubbage and Steve also discuss Asterisk’s strengths in the business and their work with developing the cyber security industry from the bottom up.

In this interview, Dr Peter Hannay of Edith Cowan University (ECU) provides insight into the recent completion of his doctoral research which focused on historical location data that can be gathered from small and embedded devices. This research was used by WA Police to assist in homicide cases, for tracking a suspect’s movements, as well as providing a credible alibi.

In this episode, we speak with Alex Manea, Chief Security Officer at Blackberry. We discuss Blackberry’s return to its core as a software and security company, and its move away from mobile handsets. The discussion moves to the release of the Melbourne Shield crisis communication network, which utilises the Blackberry At-Hoc platform, and allows messages to be sent to students, employees or even customers, in the case of a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
